There is no replacement for relevant traffic.
Search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing can be an excellent source of high quality web traffic. Search engines don’t attract visitors who ’stumble upon’ your website or accidentally clicked on an ad banner. Instead, they send you interested visitors who type in a desire while fully expecting to find what they need. They are engaged right from the start and ready to buy, browse or read, or research.
If their desire is well fulfilled by your webpage, your user may end up adding your website as a bookmark, a new customer, repeat reader, or source. Added bonus: search engine traffic is consistent and usually cost-free. Ranking well for several relevant keywords or phrases could get you a steady stream of visitors everyday. That’s why some businesses choose to hire SEO firms/consultants.
There are many factors involved in the actual ranking of a site (called an algorithm) on a search engine results page, one of them being the use of keywords in the domain name. While the use of a keyword or key phrase does not alone promise a high ranking, it does seem to be a factor to some extent, partially because the domain name is often used as the anchor text for links.
That is why it is imperative to know what your potential searchers are looking for. I can't imagine putting out content that isn't reflective of the domain or the keyword data provided. So many times I find websites that come up and they have a better chance of making people like me throw my hands up in the air in disgust. AND, this is normally because the author did not correctly, stamp their site with good descriptors.
Eventually, I think that there will be true standards that will help all users get to the desired content that they are looking for and things won't be up to chance. And the accidental traffic will become real users. Until then, keep in mind that it is all about content, the words expressed are the results that are found!
